Exploitation of 457 Visa Workers

(ABC Radio, PM Agenda, 6 September 2013) ABC Radio Michael Janda reports that a new report by Macquarie University has uncovered serious abuses of employment rights under the 457 visa scheme. Worker Dung Nguyen is on a 457 visa and is being paid below the minimum wage. Dung says he should be working as a chef, but he worked as a kind of cleaner. And his employer fired him when he asked for a pay increase when he took on cooking responsibilities. Dung also paid a premium to his migration agent for his 457 visa. The Transport Workers' Union has been helping Dung, and TWU National Secretary Tony Sheldon, says the Bureau of Statistics shows spending in hotels and restaurants as fallen yet there has been an increase in the number of 457 visas.
