(TEN Eyewitness News, 5 January 2014) Unrealistic timetables, unsafe work conditions and unfair pressure placed on transport workers has led to a shortage of truck drivers across Australia. The Australian Trucking Association (ATA) is lobbying the federal government to import foreign workers to fill the gap, using skilled worker visas. The TWU believes the solution is at home, falling on better working conditions for drivers and an end to unsafe and unrealistic deadlines - by working with the Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal to make the industry that young people want to work in.
